UK Legacy and Reconciliation (Amnesty) Bill

The Northern Ireland Legacy and Reconciliation Act amounts to a blanket amnesty for the British Government’s state-sanctioned murderers in Northern Ireland.

More than 3,500 people, many innocent, unarmed civilians, were killed in Northern Ireland in the recent 50 year struggle, many of them by British Government operatives—the Army, the Royal Ulster Constabulary, and lawless mercenaries working hand in glove with British Government agents. Their victims included two prominent civil rights lawyers who were assassinated. With amnesty for these murders, justice delayed will forever be justice denied.

This contemptible bill has been opposed by every political party in Northern Ireland as well as by the Irish Government, Amnesty International, the Law Society of Northern Ireland, the Council of Europe, the UN High Commissioner of Human Rights, Relatives for Justice, the Catholic Primate of Ireland, the Church of Ireland, and a group of 27 bipartisan members of Congress. Even the UK’s own House of Lords voted against the bill before the Commons overrode them.

The British Government’s butchery of its own citizens in Northern Ireland echoes a long, sordid history of violence against cultures across the globe, from Rhodesia to South Africa to India to China.

Victims and their families must depend on the Irish Government to commence an interstate case before the European Court of Human Rights to overturn this deeply hurtful law.

Its time to demand an end to Britain’s cruelty and stand up for human rights.
