Dear Editor:

In “Queen Elizabeth Visits Ireland” (5/18) there is a factual error that appears all too frequently in many newspapers.  It references  as fact,  “Northern Ireland opted to stay part of the U. K.,  triggering decades of violence …etc”  There was no entity called Northern Ireland until a British Parliament created it without one Irish vote in December, 1920.  There was no Country to defend the results of the 1918 Irish General Election which was overwhelmingly for independence.  Had the British monarchy supported that result, the people of Ireland would have collaborated, as they are now doing  and been spared decades of violence.  In those days monarchies, much like dictators of today, didn’t much bother with elections or ignored their results.

Sincerely,
