From Geraldine Finucane:
Do you remember where you were when you heard the news that Belfast solicitor, Pat Finucane, had been murdered? Would it surprise you to learn that twenty years have passed since the killing?
My family and I plan to hold an international commemoration of the twentieth anniversary of Pat's murder in February 2009. The event will be held in Trinity College, Dublin, his former university. We intend to invite all the prominent national and international figures who have assisted in our campaign over the years, including Bill & Hillary Clinton, Bertie Ahern, Professor Kader Asmal, President Mary McAleese, and former President Mary Robinson. It is also intended that the event will mark the foundation of an annual human rights scholarship prize in Pat's name to be awarded to an undergraduate student.
The estimated cost of the commemorative event, which is planned to take place over three days, is approximately €150,000. I very much hope that you will be able to make a contribution to the costs of our event.
My family and I have been campaigning since Pat's murder in 1989 for an independent public inquiry into all of the circumstances. The exposure of the British Government in his killing and the extent of their long-running policy of collusion have attracted overwhelming support for our campaign. However, the British Government continues to delay an inquiry, despite promising one, and resists proper public examinations of their actions.
I want to hold an event that is both significant and celebrated. I believe that it is vital that the entire world is reminded that twenty years have passed since Pat's murder and still the truth is suppressed. Even with all that we now know, so much remains to be uncovered.
The murder of Pat Finucane has come to represent so much more than the murder of one person. It is a fight for exposure of the truth behind a policy that took many lives. I hope you will help me and the many others affected to win that fight.
I would like to thank you for your generosity and for taking the time to read this letter.
Yours sincerely,
Geraldine Finucane
